| Hong Kong, 16 September 2008, China Unicom Limited ("Unicom") (HKSE: 0762, NYSE: CHU), one of China's leading mobile telecommunications companies, today announced that its shareholders approved the disposal of the CDMA Business to China Telecom Corporation Limited ("China Telecom") (HKSE: 0728, NYSE: CHA) and the proposed merger of Unicom with China Netcom Group Corporation (Hong Kong) Limited ("Netcom") (HKSE: 0906, NYSE: CN) at its extraordinary general meeting held today.
Subject to the other conditions to the completion of the CDMA Business disposal being satisfied, the Completion Date of the transaction will be on 1 October 2008. Upon completion, Unicom will focus on expanding its GSM business and introducing 3G services upon being granted a 3G licence.
The proposed merger between Unicom and Netcom is subject to the approval of the shareholders of Netcom who will vote on the proposed merger tomorrow.
