Since the establishment of China Unicom in 1994, the company has shouldered the responsibility of breaking up monopoly and meeting the communications needs of the society. Over the years, the company has been running its business by law and by professional ethics, making unremitting efforts for building an "open, fair and equal" telecom market, actively supporting various community services, creating and realizing its social value with a high sense of social responsibility.
In 2003, to fight against "SARS", China Unicom responded to the call of the government and donated a total of RMB 41 millions in cash and in kind, including video systems, mobile phones, phone cards, to the national health ministry, anti-SARS agencies and other relevant organizations, rendering a contribution to the final victory of the anti-SARS campaign.
In 2004, in a move to render support to the Southeastern Asian countries in their fight against the tsunami disaster, China Unicom set up a special access number, 9260, for receiving SMS donations across the country, calling on all Unicom subscribers to make donations to the peoples caught in the disaster.
In 2005, taking a lead in response to the large-scale community service project, the "Red Cross Angel Program" launched by China Red Cross, which called for greater attention for peasants suffering in poverty as well as better care for children's lives and healthcare, China Unicom gave full support to the program by designing and distributing 10 million special mobile phone charge cards. Every charge card sold by China Unicom nationwide meant a donation of RMB 0.1 yuan to China Red Cross, which eventually accumulated to a total amount of RMB 1 million yuan donation.
In September 2006, with China Unicom as the communications sponsor, the Hoh Xil Scientific Survey and Exploration set off again. As the chief partner and the sole communications sponsor, China Unicom provided a full range of communications system, consisting of such equipment as off-road vehicles carrying a CDMA network Base Transceiver Station (BTS), satellite emergency communications vehicles and satellite transponders to ensure the success of this scientific survey. In the Hoh Xil scientific survey which lasted three years, China Unicom donated more than RMB 20 million worth of communications equipment and personnel services.
In November 2006, China Unicom joined Red Cross Society of China and launched the 9993 SMS donation number. The launch of this special service number has constructed a platform of love for ordinary citizens for donating small sums of money and involving in the community services of the Red Cross Society. All the donated sums were forwarded to the public service account of the Red Cross Society of China for use in the humanitarian work of the Red Cross Society.
