| China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (formerly known as China Unicom Limited)(the "Company")was incorporated in Hong Kong in February 2000 and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong on 21 June 2000 and 22 June 2000 respectively. On 1 June 2001, the Company was included as a constituent stock of the Hang Seng Index.
On 15 October 2008, the Company merged with China Netcom Group Corporation (Hong Kong)Limited.
China United Telecommunications Corporation ("Unicom Group")and China Network Communications Group Corporation ("Netcom Group")are the major shareholders of the Company. As of 15 October 2008, Unicom Group has an effective interest of 27.83% of the shares in the Company through its shareholding in China Unicom (BVI)Limited and China United Telecommunications Corporation Limited ("A Share Company"). The public investors of A Share Company have an effective interest of 13.09% of the shares in the Company through A Share Company’s shareholding in China Unicom (BVI)Limited. Netcom Group indirectly holds 29.49% of the shares in the Company through its shareholding in China Netcom Group Corporation (BVI)Limited. SK Telecom and Telefonica International S.A.U. hold 3.79% and 4.21% of the shares in the Company respectively. The remaining 21.59% of the shares in the Company are held by public investors in Hong Kong and New York.
At present, the Company is engaged in GSM cellular business in 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, the provision of international and domestic long distance calls, data and mobile Internet services, and other related telecommunication value-added businesses. As of 30 June 2008, the Company had 127.6 million subscribers for its GSM cellular businesses.
The Company is also a leading broadband and fixed-line telecommunications operator in the PRC and provides services in Beijing Municipality, Tianjin Municipality, Hebei Province, Henan Province, Shandong Province, Liaoning Province, Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Neimenggu Autonomous Region and Shanxi Province. The Company provides fixed-line voice and value-added services, broadband and other Internet-related services, information and communications technology services, business and data communications services as well as advertising media services.
The Company aims to become a world-class provider of broadband communications and information services, establishing competitive advantages in technology, products and services, providing professional and multi-tiered information services and satisfying the changing and diverse needs of China’s telecommunications market.
